MALTESE STUDENT WINS 2nd PRIZE IN
EUCYS IN PARIS
Philip Cardona, a 20 year old student, has just returned from the EU Contest for Young Scientists where his project “Cappuccino Logo Printer” won 2nd Prize. Philip’s participation in the EUCYS was made possible through NSTF.
Philip had placed first in this year’s NSTF Contest for Young Scientists held at St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity during the annual NSTF Science Week in March. The National Student Travel Foundation (Malta) was nominated National Organiser for the EU Contest for Young Scientists by the Ministry of Education in 1997 and through the annual national contest selects the participants for the EU Contest for Young Scientists as well as Expo Science Europe / International. This programme is held in collaboration with the Malta Chamber of Scientists and the Malta Council for Science and Technology.
Philip is a student at the Institute of Electrical Engineering and Electronics within MCAST. The idea for this project came while working in a bar during the summer months. When preparing Cappuccino, he always tried to make it more attractive with some design such a heart or flower. This evolved into an idea for a machine which could print any logo or design on the froth. The Cappuccino Logo Printer is used to print pre-defined logos on the froth of a cappuccino in a cup using food colouring as ink.
Anyone interested in participating in this year’s NSTF Contest for Young Scientists with a chance to win the opportunity to represent Malta at the EU Contest for Young Scientists in Lisbon or at the Expo Science Europe in Moscow should contact Mariella-Pia Tabone on mtabo@nsts.org or check more information at www.nsts.org.
